There were 12,937 violent crimes in 2008 compared to 13,055 in 2007. Across the United States, violent crimes declined 1.9 percent in 2008, the FBI reported.
In Memphis, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter increased from 128 to 138 and aggravated assault from 7,605 to 7,646. Rape declined from 452 to 366, and robbery was down from 4,870 to 4,787.
There was a significant increase, however, in one property crime. Burglary was up from 14,613 to 15,874. Auto theft, however, fell from 6,200 to 5417.
Reporting procedures, timing, categories, and terminology for the FBI and Memphis police differ. The police department reported mid-year numbers in July showing 14.85 percent overall reduction in crime over a three-year period and a 10-percent decline compared to the first half of 2008. MPD says there were 168 homicides in 2008 compared to 164 in 2007.
