Tomeka Hart Readies Launch of Congressional Race

9th District congressman Steve Cohen, whose three terms to date have generated impressive national attention, is apparently not going to avoid challenge in the Democratic primary from local Urban League head and School Board member Tomeka Hart.

Hart, whose announced campaign had long been dormant, is finally on the move. She was the beneficiary of a Monday night fundraiser at the Joysmith Gallery on Huling, and she has plans to open her campaign headquarters near the Hollywood/Chelsea intersection on Thursday.

Hart was, along with Board colleague Martavius Jones, one of the prime movers behind the Memphis City Schools board's decision to surrender its charter last December — a circumstance that launched the ongoing merger between MCS and Shelby County Schools.

Since his first election to Congress in 2006, former state Senator Cohen has comfortably turned back successive Democratic Party challengers. He defeated Nikki Tinker in the 2008 primary and former Mayor Willie Herenton in 2010 -- both by margins of 4 to 1.

Both contestants will have to wait to see the exact confines of the 9th District, the lines of whch will be re-drawn by the General Assembly in January.

Did Harold Ford Jr get primaried every election? I don't recall that happening.

Why? Seriously, give me one semi-good reason to challenge Cohen.

I support Steve, but it doesn't bother me at all to see him challenged. God knows our boy could use a little humility. After I watched him have a meltdown because a lobby television channel was set to Rachael Ray instead of CNN, I can attest.

Who was at the fundraiser?

Considering her part in the school consolidation mess, I think Ms. Hart is in over her head.

That's the $1,000,000 question, Broadbully. Jackson doesn't ever, ever leave those details out, so while we'll have the certain answer after the January FEC filing deadline, I think we both already know the answer.

The midtown liberals vote along racial lines more than anyone. They support Obama but refuse to support local Democrats.

The two Steves of Midtown, Cohen and Mulroy are the perfect examples of this.

Steve Mulroy who calls himself a liberal recently voted to have Pro-lifers run healthcare for women in Memphis. Mulroy betrayed Planned Parenthood. Is this the actions of a true liberal? Where was Steve Cohen when Planned Parenthood was being trashed by the Republicans and Mulroy? Why was he not standing up for women's healthcare?

Steve Cohen attended a political fundraiser for a Republican Senatorial candidate two years ago. This candidate opposed President Obama's jobs bills. Why would a liberal Democratic congressman attend a Republican fundraiser?

In his last two elections, Steve Cohen has been pandering to East Memphis Republican voters. This action obviously is an attempt to appeal to voters by race. The Democratic Party and Memphis deserves better.

Liberals in Memphis are not real liberals. The Democratic Party in Memphis is dead.

I suppose Stapletondia votes for women only?

Tinker and Herenton were carnival sideshow rejects. Hart is a serious challenger and honestly will be more moderate and thoughtful than the ever-foaming-at-the-mouth liberal ranter Cohen. This will be a real contest.

I no longer vote in the 9th, but I'll be very interested in seeing where she stands on specific issues.

What is your definition of liberal? Is it based solely on fundraiser attendance? Name some specific votes by Cohen that make him less of a liberal than Hart.

You pronounce the Democratic Party in Memphis dead. If that is true, it's cheap shots and nitpicking pettiness like yours that has killed it.

Steve Cohen likes to attend local Republican Senatorial fundraisers. That is the truth.

Do you think Nancy Pelosi would attend a Republican fundraiser?

Do you think Barney Frank would attend a Republican fundraiser?

How about Al Franken?

Would the late Ted Kennedy do that? I do not think so.

A real liberal does not help fund Republicans reelection bids.

There are no real liberals in Memphis.

Steve Cohen is a professional politician, who, nonetheless, embarrasses himself and Memphis every year. From the "Obama is Jesus" comment to causing a scene at a White House Christmas Party, Steve steps in it...often.

Steve's penchant for gaffes, though, won't stop him...until the voters catch on. And, let's face it, who gives a crap about politics and politicians? That's the best ally Steve's got...........APATHY.

The Court Jester will live another day. And why the astute Jackson Baker continues to carry the Court Jester's water...remains a mystery. Perhaps, birds of a feather flock together.
