Bringing Up Bunny

The fictional Easter Bunny may get the spotlight this time of year, but Easter isn't always kind to real bunnies.

Adopted as cute, cuddly pets in the spring, rabbits are often surrendered to pet stores and shelters weeks later when parents realize their young ones aren't responsible enough to care for them. But unlike dogs and cats, they aren't adopted out. They're often sent to slaughter.

The rescue group RabbitWise was formed in Memphis a few months ago, and on Thursday, April 6th, volunteer Jess Crownover is holding an art auction to raise funds for the group and its sister group, Bunny Rescue of Nashville.

The silent auction will feature work by 12 local artists. Amy LaVere and Valerie June (formerly of Bella Sun) will perform.

"RabbitWise and Bunny Rescue will be there teaching people how to take care of rabbits, and we'll also have foster rabbits needing homes," said Crownover. "In McMinnville, we rescued 75 rabbits from a hoarder, and we still have 12 left to adopt out."
