1. DeSoto County sues Memphis, claiming we are using too much water from our shared aquifers. What are they complaining about? The Mississippi River is right there, and there's plenty of water in it. Sure, it's a little muddy, but you'll get used to the taste after a while.

2. With a bang and a boom, demolition crews bring down two old Baptist Hospital buildings to make way for the UT-Baptist Research Park. Local media tells everyone the exact time of the explosion (6:15 a.m on Sunday morning) but repeatedly warn that "this is not a public event." Are they kidding? They could have sold tickets to this thing.

3. Earlier last week, another crowd gathers on Peabody Avenue to watch movers tow a two-story house down the street. Their attention just proves that Memphians are easily entertained. Forget about multimillion-dollar forums and pyramids. Just blow up a hospital, roll a house down a street -- that's all we need for excitement.

4. Court Square reopens downtown after a $640,000 renovation. It looks nice, with new walkways and all, but did we really need to spend money on wireless Internet access?

5. The City Council wants to add traffic cameras to Memphis' busiest -- and most dangerous -- intersections to catch red-light runners on tape. Who do we think we are -- Germantown? •
