1. After attending a long City Council meeting on property-tax increases, Mayor Willie Herenton leaves the room, then returns and takes a seat, where he calls the council members "an embarrassment." After a pause, he adds, "a f--king embarrassment," apparently not realizing -- or more likely, not caring -- that TV news cameras are still running. Well, they might be an embarrassment, but we don't know anything about their love lives. And we don't want to.

2. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Memphians are not the nation's worst drivers. In fact, an Allstate Insurance survey ranks us as the nation's 19th best. Top honors go to the cautious drivers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Well, no wonder they won. How fast can you possibly go on a tractor?

3. The University of Memphis announces it will raise tuition precisely 12.5 percent. We're glad they stopped short of an even 13 percent; that would have been unbearable.

4. Facing bribery charges, state senator John Ford says, "The government has tried to show me and others as being corrupt and villains when, in essence, they're the ones that are corrupt. They are the villains." Enough already. He should have just gone with "Not guilty."

5. The City Council raises fees for property taxes and garbage pickup while restoring recycling to once-a-week. Those proposals eliminate one problem: Now we don’t have to worry about all those piles of leftover cash that were cluttering up the house.
