1. Willie Herenton announces he will seek a fifth term as mayor of Memphis. To put his long stint in office in perspective, consider this: Some of the people who will be voting hadn't started school when Herenton was first elected mayor way back in 1992.

2. Political gadfly and occasional presidential candidate Al Sharpton visits Memphis to join a rally in Forrest Park about - oh, you've heard all that by now. He ends up criticizing our mayor as much as he does Forrest, and Herenton fires back, saying all Sharpton can do is "run his mouth." This battle to rename the parks may go on longer than the Civil War.

3. Rumors spread that a large part of Overton Square, including such former landmarks as Friday's and the Palm Court, will be demolished to make way for a Target. The giant retailer eventually quashes those rumors but announces it is indeed looking for a site in Midtown. Sears Crosstown seems an obvious choice, but Target officials say the building is too large. Well, you don't have to use the whole thing, do you? How about leaving some space for a Krispy-Kreme?

4. Work has finally begun on the Walnut Grove road-widening project. Be forewarned. If you live in East Memphis and are having a heart attack, say, and need to get to the Baptist Hospital emergency room, don't wait until the last minute. Better plan about three hours ahead.
