Never-ending Elvis

From New York Times fashion writer Eric Wilson: "Elvis, of course, was the Lady Gaga of his day." The article about Graceland's "Fashion King" exhibit ends with Wilson observing that Elvis may "have been just an ordinary guy with a thing for guns."

Never let it be said that former mayor and congressional hopeful Willie Herenton doesn't listen to his critics. His first clumsy attempt at a campaign website had Memphis' online political observers asking some big questions: Is it really all about race? Why does that combination of porn-site red and electric blue burn my eyes so much? That 1997 retro look: cool or not cool? And so on. Herenton's web crew heard the message and responded by making some simple but crucial design changes. The content's the same on the second version, an easier-on-the-eye retro 2004 look featuring tasteful white characters over a sturdy brick-red background.

Variety's Cirque reporter Bob Verini doesn't think du Soleil's tribute to the King takes care of business. According to Verini, "Elvis hasn't left the building, but his presence is only partly felt in 'Viva Elvis.'" The review accuses the show of "Vegas cliches" and of not "seriously honoring" Elvis' impact. It concludes with a warning to all Cirque-N-Roll fans: The "sumptuous Aria may seem like Heartbreak Hotel." At least he didn't say "hunka hunka" or "it's a Jungle Room out there."
