Awkward

Yes, it's a Labor Day thing, and yes, "all white" refers to the attire you're supposed to wear. But one doesn't have to be an idealist, or all that P.C. really, to think that event planners for the Crescent Club — "East Memphis' Premier Business Club" — might have considered another name for their membership party.

Listed!

Like the old saying goes, "If you don't like my driving, get off the sidewalk." Transportation for America, an organization supporting progressive transportation and land use, ranked Memphis the seventh most dangerous U.S. city for pedestrians, with a danger index of 132.6 and an annual pedestrian fatality rate of 2.1 per 100,000 people. It's easy to blame all of this on inconsiderate drivers and bad design, but as Fox News' Scott Madaus put it in a 2010 report on Memphis pedestrians, "Jaywalkers cross the street, seemingly unaware that thousands of pounds of metal are coming their way."

Zombie Power

The Tennessee Valley Authority has a very serious new rule: No costumes will be tolerated at board meetings. The rule, which was created to "avoid disruption," was enacted after a hoard of protesters dressed like zombies paraded through the streets Chattanooga in opposition to a proposal to finish a scrapped reactor at the Bellefonte nuclear plant. It's unclear whether or not T-shirts with images from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster count as costumes.
