When: Sun., July 5, 2:30 p.m. 2009
What is yellow and pointy and came to Earth from the Sun? Need more hints? He’s friendly, has a pet eel named Slimothy, and pals around with a tuxedo-wearing pterodacytl.
Well, duh. Of course, it’s Gustafer Yellowgold, the hot-blooded and colorful creature that sprang from the imagination of illustrator/singer-songwriter Morgan Taylor. The CD/DVD Mellow Fever tells the story in music and simple animation of how Gustafer and his cohorts met and how they deal with such issues as loneliness and lost pants.
Aimed at the 2-to-8 set, this is kids’ stuff to be sure — Taylor was named “Best Kids Performer” in 2008 by New York magazine — only without the antic-y, manic-y approach that tends to drive parents batty. In fact, Gustafer’s tunage has a pedigree, including Lisa Loeb and members of Wilco, which would make it no surprise at all if any of these songs made it onto Mom and Dad’s iPod.
For his live shows, Tayor performs his music in front of a screen featuring Gustafer and his friends in action. He’ll play and sign CDs at Barnes & Noble at Wolfchase on Sunday. — Susan Ellis
