Look out, Satan! From Wednesday, July 19th, to Sunday, July 23rd, the crunchy sounds of prerecorded Christian metal will rattle the walls of the Ridgeway Assembly of God. Phonebooks will be ripped in half like wet matchbooks. Hot-water bottles will be blown up and exploded like toy balloons. Steel bars will be twisted like pretzels, and sturdy police handcuffs -- representing the shackles of sin -- will be snapped in twain. The Power Team is coming to Memphis to beat the devil, preach the iron-pumping gospel of Jesus Christ, and break lots and lots of heavy things.
The Power Team ministry put its extreme revival on the road in the late 1970s, serving up personal testimonies and old time gospel preaching alongside amazing feats of superhuman strength, speed, and agility. The group, which claims to have won more souls for Christ than anyone except Billy Graham, hit choppy waters in 2000, following the controversial divorce and troubled remarriage of the organization's founder John Jacobs. But you can't keep a good group of ordained body builders down. The muscle-bound evangelists split into competing troupes, including the Next Generation Power Force and Team Impact, but the original Power Team soldiers on under the leadership of longtime member Todd Keene. They continue to crush concrete walls, smash cinderblocks, and sweat in the name of Jesus.
