Hooked on Speed

According to a traditional children's song, little boys are made of "snips and snails and puppy dogs' tails." Whoever wrote that obviously never went to a drag race. If they had, they'd know that boys, from little to big, are made of nitromethane fuel, turbochargers, burnt-out tires, and noises louder than Gabriel's horn at the end of the world.

Find out for yourself at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington with the 19th annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals. This Friday! Friday! Friday! through Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!, you can catch the fastest people on asphalt trying to do each other one-thousandth of a second better.

Drag racing isn't an all-boys club, though. You may think girls are made of "sugar and spice," but a day at the races will fix that opinion quick. Top Fuel Dragster driver Melanie Troxel is but one of many women who will be turning heads (at over 300 miles per hour) this weekend at the Motorsports Park.

Bleacher bullets can try their hand at speed insanity, too, racing virtually via funny-car simulators. Spectator gates open early each day, and racing continues into the evening, so steel yourself for a full, exciting weekend on the edge of your seat as drivers do inadvisable things to the delight of the masses.
