Anguish comes in many forms at the MCA Graduate School's inaugural exhibition. Printmaking, etching, relief print, photography, video, installation, and sculpture from nine different artists will make up the show titled simply "Anguish."

"The idea for this exhibition has been kicking around in my head for over a year," curator Cynthia Thompson says. "I like to come up with a concept and find artists whose work reflects that in different ways. It's challenging, and I do it also because I like to challenge the viewers. It's important to bring work to Memphis that people can not only view but experience."

The exhibit opened on Monday, but the inaugural reception is Friday, October 8th, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the new downtown graduate school on South Main. Also look out for the exhibit's Trolley Night reception on October 29th, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The exhibition features the work of Polly Apfelbaum, Louise Bourgeois, Rosemary Laing, Kiki Smith, Anna Tsantir, Tara Donovan, Jenny Holzer, Oscar Muñoz, and Anders Krisar.

"Viewers can make connections between the work," Thompson says. "Some of it might be unsettling, but I like the fact that it makes people think."
