It may be illegal for minors to buy products containing nicotine, but according to a wire story distributed by UPI, Memphis kids have no trouble buying nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and other products aimed at helping smokers kick the habit. Dr. Karen Johnson of the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center discovered that a 15-year-old girl sent to buy nicotine replacement products was successful 81 percent of the time. Should this lead to a citywide crackdown, the poor kid may just have to keep smoking.
