Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell has been consistently rumored as a candidate for county mayor in 2010 almost from the moment n 2006 that incumbent Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton was elected for the second and final term permitted him by law. But Luttrell will formally announce this week that which he had already indicated to the Flyer – namely, that he will eschew a mayoral race and run instead for reelection in 2010.

The possibility of a Luttrell candidacy for mayor, one which numerous fellow Republicans had continued to urge upon him, derived chiefly from a demonstrated crossover popularity -- unmatched among local Republican officials except possibly by District Attorney General Bill Gibbons -- that always allowed Luttrell to get beaucoup votes from the Democratic side of the electorate.

But militating against a mayoral candidacy by Luttrell had been two other factors – the sheriff’s knowledge that demographic change was progressively eroding the chances of white Republicans running countywide and the simple fact that he enjoyed the job he was doing in law enforcement.
