Memphis Cellarman Party

When: Sat., Aug. 27, 1 p.m. 2011

Some years back, and much to the amusement of my coworkers, I touched a bunghole. It was in public, and there is photographic evidence.

Yep, I was that day's winner to tap the cask at Boscos Squared. This happy-hour promotion was begun in 1997. Patrons who buy a beer are entered into the drawing to tap the cask — involving the aforementioned bunghole and the tap called a "cock" — and those who get to tap the cask are invited to the annual Cellarman of the Year Party and entered into another drawing to win a trip to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado.

This year's Cellarman event is Saturday, August 27th.

According to Chuck Skypeck, Boscos' founding partner, the Great American Beer Festival draws about 15,000 attendees and features 1,500 beers. The winners of the Cellarman party — one from each of Boscos' four locations: Memphis, Nashville, Franklin, and Little Rock — receive airfare, lodging, and two passes to the festival.

There's still a chance to be eligible for this year's Cellarman by entering the cask-tapping drawings on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.

Skypeck's advice on tapping is to "hit it hard and hit it square." He's seen someone make 200 attempts before getting it right. But it was the very first cask-tapping at the Nashville location that really blew his mind.

The tapper sized up the situation, and with one blow, executed the task perfectly. Skypeck asked him, "How did you know how hard to hit it?" "I'm a brain surgeon," the man answered. "I crack skulls every day."

Cellarman of the Year Party at Boscos Squared, Saturday, August 27th. The party starts at 1 p.m., and the drawing is at 4 p.m.
