Peace Process

The third annual Gandhian Conference on Non-Violence couldn't come at a better time. Just last week, the FBI named Memphis the second most dangerous city in the country, and our homicide numbers far exceed those of last year.

In an effort to quell the city's violent image, the Gandhian conference features lectures by peace activists from all over the world. Sister Helen Prejean, a Catholic crusader against the death penalty who was portrayed in Dead Man Walking, is the weekend's keynote speaker. Others include the conference's founder/Mahatma's grandson Arun Gandhi, foreign policy/ arms expert Frida Berrigan, and local healing guru Rosalyn Nichols.

A new component to this year's conference involves nonviolence training for 100 selected students from city and county middle and high schools. They'll be attending specially designed workshops running concurrent with adult workshops.
