We love our Grizzlies, Redbirds, and Tigers, but there's no Mid-South sports institution like the FedEx St. Jude Classic. For the 49th consecutive year, the PGA will send many of the finest golfers in the world to Memphis, where they'll compete for a $5.2 million purse, including a $936,000 winner's check. The event's list of past champions is a who's who of golfing greats: Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino (who won here three times), Gary Player, Nick Price, and Greg Norman, to name a few. Better yet, the tournament has raised more than $16 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital over the last 20 years. From tournament director Phil Cannon to the countless volunteers raising "Hush Y'all" signs, the FESJC carries the Memphis flag for a national audience as well as any basketball or football star. This year's event will be the last with FedEx as a title sponsor. (The local company will be the umbrella sponsor of the PGA's new points system next year.) So grab a hat, some comfortable shoes, and head out to Southwind to see who might succeed defending champ Justin Leonard.
