The spring concert season at the Levitt Shell concludes this week and the final week gets off to a big start with the "This Is Memphis" concert, an R&B-themed celebration of Memphis music organized in part by Royal Studios. Scheduled to perform are the classic Hi Rhythm Section, which backed Al Green on most of his classic recordings and produced their own "lost classic" album with 1976's On the Loose. Joining Hi Rhythm are a trio of "living legend" soul/blues singers: former Hi hitmaker Otis Clay (pictured), Beale-bred blues titan Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Mississippi showman Bobby Rush. Rounding out the bill are younger Memphis R&B singer Stephanie Bolton and kiddie rapper Lil P-Nut. The "This Is Memphis" concert happens at the Levitt Shell on Thursday, June 28th. Showtime is
7:30 p.m. Free.
Continuing the soul-celebration vibe at the Shell is the Stax Music Academy concert on Saturday — also 7:30 p.m., also free — which is being dubbed "WattStax Revisited" and which will celebrate the 40th anniversary of that classic Stax concert. — Chris Herrington
