Is Harold Ford Jr. telling fibs about Tennessee State Senator Rosalind Kurita, or is he just out of touch with Tennessee politics?
Ford, recently tapped to head the Democratic Leadership Council, has been defending his policies and the policies of the DLC against online critics at the popular Web site Talking Points Memo Café. On Thursday he stated -- for whatever reasons -- that Kurita, who briefly opposed Ford in the 2006 Senate primary, switched parties in January, shifting control of the Tennessee legislature to the GOP, and was rewarded with the post of Speaker pro-tem.
True, Kurita did cast the deciding vote to replace Lt. Governor John Wilder, a Democrat, with Republican Ron Ramsey. She claims that this was a decision of conscience based on the fact that the GOP was the majority party then (a Republican member has since become an independent). She has repeatedly denied all rumors that she is changing parties.
