Readers of Paul Ryburn’s Journal: Daily Thoughts of a Downtown Resident come for the reviews of downtown bars and events, anecdotes about late-night (afternoon and early-evening) drinking, not to mention the photos of cutting-edge tube-top fashion. There’s also a widget to “buy-Paul-a-beer.”
This made us wonder: what, beyond his liquid diet, constitutes three squares for Paul Ryburn? Now that we’ve found out, may we suggest adding “buy-Paul-an-apple” to the options?
What would be a normal meal for you?
I eat out most every meal. For lunch, I'll drive to Burger King, Popeye’s, Taco Bell, Blimpie, Overstuffed Deli, Domino's, or a Chicago beef and hot dog place called Mr. Rusty's. I'll usually bring it back to my desk and eat while I make my lunchtime post to my blog.
After work I tend to eat at the restaurants near where I live. Kooky Canuck, Majestic Grille, Huey's, Silly Goose, Flying Fish, On the River Seafood, Rio Loco, and Bardog Tavern are places where I frequently eat or get to-go food. I hang out at the Flying Saucer more than any other bar but rarely eat their food.
How would you describe your diet? Would you say you have a healthy diet?
Hmmm, you know, I'd have to go with “no” on that. I'd say sandwiches and fries dominate my diet. I do try to eat a salad once or twice a week. I also drink a couple of bottles of Mountain Dew a day. I'm not a morning person at all and it's the only way I can be functional at 8 a.m.
When was the last time you cooked a meal at home?
I think I heated up a can of chili in the microwave a few weeks ago. You mean actual cooking? Well, I think there was one time last year when I bought a filet and cooked it on my George Foreman grill. George cooks a mean steak.
When was the last time you ate a piece of fruit?
Um. Hmmm .... um ... wow, let's see. Uh, there was ... no, that wasn't fruit, that was a double beef burrito ... uh, gosh, I... WAIT!!! I know! A few weeks ago I decided to change things up and went to the Silly Goose for Sunday brunch. There was a fruit cup on the plate, I think. Strawberries and melon pieces. Yeah, I definitely ate those. I washed them down with a PBR.
What 5 food items can always be found in your refrigerator?
