When the temperature hits triple digits, I, like most Memphians, seriously consider moving to Antarctica for the summer and/or taking up residence inside a deep freezer. However, since neither of those options is viable, I turn to other cool activities, like taking cold showers and drinking smoothies.
In Jackson, MS, there is this little health food store next to a string of coffee shops, art galleries, and boutiques. One day, I went in to get some groceries and noticed that a guy was giving out samples of something. Since I’m a huge sample sucker, I immediately made a beeline for him. He handed me a cup with something cold and creamy. I took a bite… it tasted like banana ice cream.
When I asked him what ingredients he used, I was shocked when he replied, “just frozen bananas.”
After that, I started throwing my overripe bananas into the freezer, skins and all. Once they had frozen hard, I would take one out, run it under some warm water for about 10 seconds, cut off both ends, and gently peel the skin off (it comes off really easily). Chopped up in a blender with some strawberries, soymilk, and oranges, frozen banana makes for the perfect, creamy smoothie.
You, too, can enjoy the icy cold smoothness of a frozen banana-infused blended drink. Not quite as exciting as moving to a frozen tundra but definitely cheaper.
Banana and Other Stuff Smoothie
1 frozen banana, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
2-3 ice cubes
1 cup soymilk (can substitute milk or juice)
Handful of frozen or fresh berries or other fruit
Add all ingredients to blender. Blend on high until smooth and creamy. Drink immediately, before the Memphis heat melts it.
