McCarter, a former employee of the Shelby County government, founded the business in 2007 with his wife Debra.
“It was something that evolved,” McCarter says. He explains that after he and Debra visited micro-roasters while vacationing in places like Seattle or Hawaii, a thought occurred to him: “not a lot of folks are doing that around here.”
McCarter’s offers a rotating selection of more than 20 different single-origin beans from places like Indonesia, Brazil, Rwanda, Mexico, and Burundi. Each bean is roasted at a different temperature in the business’ two roasters, producing about 10 pounds a batch and 100 to 120 pounds of roasted beans a day.
Of course, you can also stop by McCarter’s Millington headquarters, which is open Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You’ll find McCarter there providing cups of his freshly brewed creations and knocking down the “coffee’s just coffee” mentality.
“Each bean is unique,” McCarter says. “When you roast, brew, drink it, you’re experiencing something.”
