Cater to You Event Saturday

The Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is holding its first “Cater to You: A Gentlemen’s Way” event on Saturday, September 19th, at 6 p.m., at the Pink Palace.

“Cater to You” is a fund-raiser to provide college scholarships to inner-city kids and will feature more than 20 amateur male chefs preparing dishes on-site.

“We have set fund-raisers every year — Jabberwock, the Ebony Fashion Fair,” says Tori Mason of Delta Sigma Theta. “We wanted to come up with something different.”

The sorority sisters have been working on “Cater to You” since last spring. Some of that time has been spent arm-twisting the participants — most of whom do not cook professionally — to feel comfortable enough to prepare a dish in front of many, many strangers.

Among those cooking are a fireman, several businessmen, and police officers, as well as state Representative G.A. Hardaway and Eyewitness News anchor Terrance Bates. On the menu: gumbo, cherry cheesecake, beef brisket, salmon pasta, and something intriguing called “Turkshrimppuccine.”

Dishes will be judged to determine “Memphis’ Best Gourmet Gent.” On the judge panel are Jo Ellen Bates of Four Way Restaurant, Gary Williams of Dejavu, and Torisha Williams of Equone’s Catering.

In addition to the dinner, Will Graves and Soul will perform and Jerry and Terry Lynn, the artists known as Twin, will create a painting during the event that will be auctioned off.

Says Mason, “We’re hoping it’s successful enough so we can do something even bigger and better next year.”

Tickets are $50 and can be obtained by calling Sheretta Dobbins at 230-1430 or Adrienne Dobbins at 603-9003.
