As far as food goes for the Flyer's Best Of party, the general rule is: If you snooze you lose.
The party started at 6 p.m. Here's a shot of a platter from Sekisui (first place for "Best Japanese/Sushi") at 6:40 p.m.
Ben Smith of Tsunami (first place for "Best Seafood") served up hot pungent shrimp in coconut milk. The shrimp was long gone by the time I met up with him. "I guess I could call it soup," he said of the remaining coconut-milk broth.
That's not to say there wasn't fabulous food to be had. Check out these plates, which include fried green tomatoes from the Cupboard (second place winner for "Best Home Cooking/Soul Food") and the smoked salmon pizza from Boscos (second place winner for "Best Patio," "Best Sunday Brunch," and "Best Beer Selection"). Boscos' pizza, I was told, was "out of this world."
Jonathan Koplin of Brother Juniper's (first place winner for "Best Breakfast") brought salmon and banana bread (but not served together).
This is Greg Eaton of Central BBQ (first-place winner of "Best Barbecue," second-place winner of "Best Ribs," and third place winner of "Best Hot Wings") helping a party-goer load up his plate with hot wings
Kelly English of Restaurant Iris (first place winner for "Best Chef" and "Best Restaurant") posed for a picture with Meghan Washburn and Ryan Heimke.
This is a shot of Fireball schnapps. The guy behind me in line couldn't stop raving about it. "Those are delicious," he told me. He was getting two — one for himself, one for a friend.
The ladies of Crazy Beautiful (first place winner for "Best Women's Clothes") show off their party dresses. Pictured are Nickie Reily, Addison Hare, Wendi Gammill, Eryka Smith, and Erin Wood. Hare's dress has a unicorn print(!).
Stacey Greenberg, a Flyer contributor and the writer behind "Dining With Monkeys" (second-place winner for "Best Local Blogger") brought her husband Warren and her monkeys Satchel and Jiro. Stacey said she's got her sons trained not to touch their food before she gets a picture.
Amy Lawrence and Justin Fox Burks were also there. Amy writes for both the Flyer and Memphis magazine. Justin takes pictures for the Flyer, including the ones in Best Of. He's also The Chubby Vegetarian.
Of course, no party would be complete without Michael Donahue (third place winner for "Best Newspaper Columnist"). Here's a super-duper close-up.
