This afternoon, Food News writer Pam Denney and I stopped by the newly opened Farmer's Market Midtown at 1632 Union.
Owner John "JR" Raney had originally tried his luck with an open-air Midtown market earlier this summer. When that didn't work out, he decided to take it indoors in a space that was previously a consignment furniture store.
Raney said that he's still securing vendors but was confident that the market would offer many more items by week's end.
There wasn't much in the way of produce — Raney told Pam it might be spring until he can get locally farmed produce — but there was a freezer full of ready-made entrees and sides from the Mississippi-based No Time 2 Cook ...
... as well as meats from Neola Farms ...
... and seafood (alligator sausage!) from Muddy Waters.
Also being sold: McCarter's Coffee, Aunt Lizzie Cheese Straws, Clifty Farms ham, plus birdhouses, goats milk soaps, honeys, and jams.
Pictured below is Elvin Littlejohn. He sells jams, honey, sorghum molasses, etc. that he gathers from purveyors from around the region. He's 87-years-old, a World War II vet, and a songwriter. He sang me a song about Jesus and told me that he has a good voice. I told him that he does have a good voice, which is true, and I'm not above lying about this sort of thing.
The market is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
