“I consider it a journey,” says Wanda Abioto.
Abioto’s journey, which she says started 25 years ago and is ongoing, is that from vegetarian to vegan to living-food enthusiast.
She recently founded a supper club, The Dreamery, to promote the living-food lifestyle and is holding a series of Sunday brunches at downtown’s Safari restaurant, starting December 6th.
According to Abioto, the diet is about keeping food as close as possible to its “natural state.” A living-food diet is vegan and raw. If food is cooked at all, it’s done at a low temperature (not much higher than 100 degrees). Living food’s emphasis is on enzymes, which helps in digestion.
How this translates eats-wise is sprouted and fermented foods, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
Sunday’s brunch will include rejuvelac, a fermented wheat-berry drink, fruit, different greens, soups, pies, and more.
Abioto acknowledges a living-food diet is a tough-sell in these parts and says she’s really not so much set on converting people as introducing to the possibilities.
“There’s no judgment,” she says, “I just want to people to know there are alternatives.”
