Cherries are finally in season, and to celebrate Whole Foods is holding a Cherry Fest on Friday, June 18th. Cherries will be on sale for $1.99 a pound, and there will be tasting of cherry-centric dishes from 3 to 5 p.m.
Stacy Early, the store's demo specialist and healthy eating liaison, stopped by the Flyer offices today with a bag of Cherry Fest-related goodies. Included were cherries and a pitter.
The cherries were perfect — a very summer treat. And the pitter is an absolute must for those planning to do any serious cooking with cherries. (It also pits olives.)
Also in the bag was a card with recipes for cherry dishes, some of which will be offered during the in-store tasting.
What I really found intriguing, though, was the idea of a cherry granita — puree pitted cherries, freeze on a baking sheet. Scrape with a fork every 30 minutes or so, until mixture forms into icy flakes. Put the granita into bowls and top with pitted cherries and a drizzle of honey.
