Marco Polo at Carmela's

Made my first visit to Carmela's Caffe last week to pick up lunch.

This sister restaurant to Ciao Bella is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday and offers a mix of Italian and Greek fare.

There are pizzas. The Macedonian includes gyro meat and pine nuts, while the Ortolana is topped with spinach, artichokes, and feta. Both are $8. Among the sandwiches are hot and cold options, including a chicken pesto panini ($7) and the "Italian Stallion" with salami, pepperoni, and ham ($7). Also on the menu, interestingly enough are fish tacos, $8.


I opted for the Marco Polo (pictured at top), sans ham. This is a panini with fresh mozzarella, basil leaves, tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and balsamic vinaigrette on ciabatta bread ($8).

The vinaigrette made the bread a tiny bit soggy on my trip downtown, but otherwise this is a very good sandwich with superb ingredients. It comes with house-made chips. I'm seeing a lot of these on menus lately, and Carmela's struck a nice balance between greasy and salty.
