Intelligent Design, Cactus Burritos at Frida's

I stopped by the newly open Frida's Mexican Restaurante last week at around 4 p.m. and it was already bustling.

It took over a year to get the restaurant open, and while, to my eye, the layout is roughly the same as the exorcised Zinnie's East — bar immediately at the entrance, seating to the right and booths hugging the wall at left — the transformation is remarkable.

For one thing, I don't recall this piece of art at Zinnie's:

There are new tile floors, freshly painted walls, and a vibrant fountain out front. As I was looking over the menu, I heard a woman at the booth behind me say, "Beautiful, beautiful ... "

She was not, however, talking about the decor.

It was the menu design she was cooing over, segueing into a lengthy ode to the software InDesign.

By that point my focus has turned to the Gonzalez Margarita, the signature drink with tequila, triple sec, and a dash of Coke. While a bit pricey at $7.75 for a small, it was good and strong.

For dinner, I ordered the cactus burrito ($9.99). This was my first cactus. The best I can describe it is pepper-like. The burrito was also filled with bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions and covered with a tomatillo sauce that gave the dish a nice heat spike. Served with rice and refried beans, this can split into two full meals.

That burrito was very good, and did you notice how the yellows, browns, reds of the dish match the Frida portrait? Beautiful, beautiful ...
