After Marvin Stockwell's wife took a knife skills class through the University of Memphis continuing education program —¬†and loved it — he started thinking about teaching a class himself.

"The instructor, Melissa Petersen at Edible Memphis, was sharing her knowledge, based on what she already knows and loves to do," says Stockwell. "I thought, I'll go ahead and teach a class."

Stockwell, public relations manager for the Church Health Center (as well as a local musician and a writer), routinely gives advice to groups interested in starting their own Church Health Center-like programs.

"I give them basic information, such as: Know how a reporter likes to be approached," he says. "If they want the information sent to them in the body of an e-mail, don't attach it. Do what they say."

[For the record, I love this piece of advice. Especially the last part. Is that wrong?]

But out-of-town groups aren't the only people he advises. After more than four years with the Church Health Center, especially after last year's Rock for Love fundraiser, Stockwell says he often gets asked to consult on media strategies for other groups and organizations.

The resulting two-hour Public Relations for Nonprofits, the first session of which is June 20th, will focus on how to do public relations for churches, civic organizations, clubs, and "any group that wants to get information out." Participants will learn about creating news briefs and press releases, how to pitch a story, and using social media.
