Burger King says "Global Warming is Baloney" signs have been removed



3d49/1243960581-burger-king-calls-global-001.jpgThe Burger King Corporation (BKC) seems to be in denial regarding the decision by Mirabile Investment Corporation (MIC), a Memphis-based management company with more then 40 Burger King locations across the Mid-South, to place the words “Global Warming is Baloney” on many of not all of its exterior signs.

BKC distanced itself from the message last week, claiming that the the “two” signs in question had been removed. At the time of Burger King's official statement, Flyer readers had already reported at least 10 such signs in various locations between Batesvile, Mississippi, and Martin, Tennessee.

Susan Robison, Vice President, Corporate Communications for BKC, responded to the numerical discrepancy saying, “We believe it was five restaurants and that all the signs should have been removed. We are in the field confirming and I'm just waiting on final confirmation.” She later reported that the company's field person “knows it was only five restaurants.” When presented with reports of at least twice as many instances, Robison responded saying, “although we can't agree on the specific number of restaurants, the important point is that we have been assured by the franchisee that the signs have been removed... under the franchise agreement, we do not allow the reader board, the restaurant, or any other advertising/promotional vehicles to promote any specific political and/or religious beliefs.” Robison was also responding to complaints that MIC forces its employees and consumers to watch Fox News.

Calls placed to MIC have not been returned.

The beef production industry is a frequent target for criticism by environmentalists. Burger King in particular has been singled out by Climatecounts.org, a not-for-profit organization that rates companies based on attitudes toward global warming as "a choice to avoid for the climate-conscious shopper." On the other hand, as reporter Leo Hickman points out in an article for the UK Guardian, John Chidsey, the company's CEO recently described climate change as "an overriding issue of importance for the global community.”
