And The Reunions Keep On Coming

5459/1245954109-7841903.jpgLast week, the Oblivians, the Gories, and Staff stepped up to the proverbial mic.

This Saturday, June 27, the Tennessee Boltsmokers return to the local scene after an extended hiatus, with a performance at Otherlands Coffee Bar.

The reason for the hiatus, according to TB guitarist Mark McKinney: "After we played at SXSW last year, we decided to take time off [from live performances] to record our next album." The TBs third full-length, Vintage All American Dream, recorded at Paul Ebersold's East Memphis studio, is slated for release this fall.

McKinney's Americana-focused label MADJACK Records, is still going strong: Susan Marshall's latest album, Little Red, was released in April, and an EP from Jed Zimmerman is on deck for a late summer release. Coincidentally, Marshall plays Otherlands this Friday night.

Meanwhile, next Monday, June 29, Dexx Haygood and Xavion throw their hat into the ring with a free gig at the Hard Rock Cafe, as part of the Memphis Music Commission's Memphis Music Mondays series.

Memphians of a certain generation will remember Xavion for "Eat Your Heart Out," a Prince-inspired number that made a huge splash on MTV in the mid-1980s. Managed by Casablanca Records owner Tommy Mottola, Xavion were poised to hit the big time, yet, not too long after their debut on Arista, they disappeared — until now!

Also slated for summer 2009 reunions: The Compulsive Gamblers, Impala, the Randy Band, Paradoxical Babel, Neon Wheels, and Flourescent Butt Jam, all scheduled to play the Antenna Club Reunion this August.
