Sound Advice: Tiffany Harmon & Other Stories CD Release Show

Up-and-coming local alternative/indie rock group Tiffany Harmon & Other Stories will celebrate the release of a debut E.P., titled Bandits, this Saturday night at the Young Avenue Deli.

The group was forged out of a chance encounter between three emerging local songwriters, Tiffany Harmon, Jeff Leedham, and Jeff Culley.

"Jeff (Leedham) and I are old friends, and we started just jamming together in our spare time and thought it was fun," says Culley. "We eventually built up the courage to play at open-mics, and that's how we eventually met Tiffany."

"I had been a solo act as a singer-songwriter since I started at the age of 15, but I always longed to be part of a collective," says Harmon. "After hanging out and chatting for a few weeks, I asked Jeff and Jeff to be my back-up band. The boys welcomed me with open arms."

The trio then recruited Justin Culley (the younger brother of Jeff Culley) on bass, drummer Rory Sullivan, and keyboardist Matt Holzmacher to round out the line-up that would eventually become Other Stories.

"In the early days we were just a few guys with big ambitions. We could hear it all in our heads, but (Jeff) Culley and I aren’t drummers, we aren’t piano players, I'm sure as hell ain't no singer, but we tried to fill all those parts," says Leedham. "What we really needed in order to shape our sound were other musicians who we could give free license to do with our music what they wished. Adding Rory and Matt really helped define our sound. I really trust the abilities of everyone in this band to take any song I bring in and make it better."

To that end, Tiffany Harmon & Other Stories have indeed produced a fine debut offering. The Bandits E.P., which echoes the likes of more established national acts like the Flaming Lips and Mazzy Star, shows undeniable promise towards a bright future in the Memphis independent music scene.

"We are a collection of sound waves that resemble lots of things you’ve heard before. Every indie/country/pop/jazz/blues/rock band that have gone before us," says Harmon. " I would like to continue playing shows for now, and hopefully record another album next year."
