As part of an ongoing company-funded research study of tornadic risk assessment, by means of the Site Assessment of Tornado Threat (SATT) software, VorTek has determined the rankings of the top twenty tornado-prone cities for the month of February.

It's noteworthy that seven Florida cities ranked in the top twenty for February. Lake County, Florida is situated 30 miles northwest of one of the cities (Orlando) and 70 miles northeast of another (Tampa).

The rankings, based on National Weather Service data from 1950 through 2005, put Memphis as the 18th-likeliest major American city to be hit by a tornado in February. Number one? St. Louis. Who knew?

The top 20, in order: St. Louis; Pasadena, TX; Shreveport, LA; Orlando; Nashville; Houston; Atlanta; Little Rock; Jackson, MS; Hollywood, FL; Pembroke Pines, FL; Hialeah, FL; Montgomery, AL; Miami; Tampa; Lafayette, LA; Knoxville; Memphis; Coral Springs, FL; Oklahoma City.
