Absorb-a the Greek

Oh sure, the Greeks may have made a few noteworthy contributions to Western civilization. They've given us philosophy, drama, democracy, architecture, ouzo, and a bunch of mostly broken statues of naked people. And ouzo. But can any of this compare to ouzo? Or to phyllo — that crispy, golden pastry rolled out as thin as paper and wrapped around a rich, eggy mixture of chopped spinach, onions, garlic, and salty feta cheese? Well, maybe it can, but the wise organizers of Greekfest, an annual celebration of all things Peloponnesian hosted by St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bartlett, understand that some people don't care about folk dancing or traditional garb. They just want to grab their souvlaki and scram. That's why Greekfest has a drive-thru.

If religious icons and architecture are your thing, Greekfest, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 3rd, features sanctuary tours. The Athenian Dance Troupe (pictured) performs two shows at 1 and 3 p.m., and there's live Greek music playing all day long for anybody who wants to dance off the calories from the galatoboureko, a thick, lemony custard layered with phyllo.
