Acts of Faith

Memphis playwright Joyce McMillian is $150 wealthier and about to see her play Back to the Water Again come to life on stage at the Hattiloo Theatre.

McMillian's script, which beat out hundreds of entries to win the young African-American theater company's first Faith-Based Playwriting Contest, is a gently comical look at the lives of a preacher's four kids who struggle with their faith when hard times and prison cells make life too complicated to bear alone.

Hattiloo executive director Ekundayo Bandele has always wanted to help raise a crop of Memphis playwrights. He says that sponsoring a faith-based playwriting competition seemed like as good a place to start as any.

"Think about how many people go out to see the Tyler Perry plays and all those other touring plays that come to town," Bandele says, describing what he sees as a large market for family-oriented playwriting with a faith-based message.

"Back to the Water Again" at the Hattiloo Theatre, April 9th-26th. $12-$18.
