The Memphis chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police has been encouraging local cops to contact their senators and tell them why they should vote yes on Amendment 2623. The amendment, which looks like it s going to pass, will allow off-duty and retired police officers to carry a concealed weapon virtually anytime, any place, and in any jurisdiction. The order s Web site explains the need for such an amendment, saying, Without a weapon, the law-enforcement officer is like a rescue diver without diving gear; all the right training and talent to lend to an emergency situation, but without the equipment needed to make that training of any use. Now, we here at Fly on the Wall don t know much about law enforcement, so we don t know if 2623 is a good amendment or a bad amendment. But we do know this: Somebody s going to get shot.
