Carol Chumney Will Announce for Memphis Mayor on February 8th

City Councilwoman Carol Chumney is making it official: As expected, she’s going to run for mayor of Memphis this year.

Chumney sent out a press release Friday that says she will make the formal announcement February 8th at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.

She will challenge, among others, Mayor Willie Herenton, who informally announced at a New Year’s Day prayer breakfast that he will again be a candidate.

Chumney, 45, previously ran for mayor of Shelby County. She served in the Tennessee House of Representatives for 13 years before winning a seat on the City Council in 2003.

Chumney is an attorney who spent several years with the Memphis firm of Glankler Brown. She is a graduate of the University of Memphis.
