Devon Allman’s Honeytribe at Young Avenue Deli

This St. Louis blues-rock trio hits town this week touring in support of their late-2010 album Space Age Blues. Devon Allman, the son of Allman Brothers singer/keyboardist Gregg Allman, returns to Memphis with his two-man rhythm section after recording the album at Ardent Studios, with Lucero sideman Rick Steff sitting in on keyboards and Huey Lewis on harmonica. (Among the other Memphis-centric aspects of the album: some Lamar Sorrento artwork and a "Go Grizzlies" liner notes shout-out.) Fitting both the album title and Allman's pedigree, Space Age Blues is a blend of blues, Southern rock, and psychedelia, with touches of French music ("Bleu Est Le Vide"), Arabic music ("Insh'Allah"), and a surprisingly effective funk-rock cover of Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke." Devon Allman's Honeytribe plays Young Avenue Deli on Friday, August 26th. Showtime is 9 p.m.
