Fly on the Wall

Mixed Media

Your Pesky Fly had to open an umbrella recently while reading an article by Commercial Appeal sports writer Ron Tillery. Commenting on the Memphis Grizzlies' winning streak, Tillery noted that Coach Lionel Hollins "leaned against a wall" because he "nearly got blown away by the winds of déjà vu." It's not every day that a phrase as delicious as "winds of déjà vu" actually makes it into print, and I didn't want to get caught in a drizzling rain of schadenfreude.

Daily Shrinkage

Speaking of The Commercial Appeal and perfect storms of déjà vu: According to a memo posted on the Memphis Newspaper Guild's website, employees at the CA are bracing for yet another round of layoffs. There is also a possibility that in order to cut production costs the size of the paper will decrease by up to 10 percent. Hopefully, no more copy editors will be caught up in this light frost of job-not-havingness.

Lost in Love

Channel 5's Jason Miles has been taking in a little soft rock and getting up close and personal with the artists. In a recent tweet Miles bragged, "Just had a convo with one of the Air Supply guys. Pretty cool." This may be the fist time the words "cool" and "Air Supply" have appeared together in a "convo" not somehow related to refrigeration.

Verbatim

At the memorial service for Memphis musician Jay Reatard, bandmate Stephen Pope told a funny story about how they celebrated Jay's signing with Matador Records: "We went to Checkers first and got a few Big Bufords. ... Then we went to Men's Warehouse. He bought a purple and black suit and he forced me to get a purple velvet blazer. Then we went to a spa downtown where we decided to get the most expensive couple's massage."
