Fly on the Wall

Unusual 4 Life

According to a recent interview with the San Jose Mercury News, '80s pop-star-turned-blues-diva Cyndi Lauper loves everything about Memphis, even the music we play in our fast-food restaurants.

"In most cities, you go into those places, and the music is so saccharine you're like, 'Ew! Don't let it get it on me!'" Lauper, best known for hits such as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," was quoted as saying. "I never had that happen in Memphis."

It's good to know that our fast food is a cut above, but after selling 25 million records you really would think that Lauper might eat better.

Crime of Convenience

When convenience store clerk Majdi Morshed tells you to leave, he means it. Morshed, a cash register jockey at the In & Out Grocery in North Memphis, was charged with one count of aggravated assault after shooting a teenager in the leg for loitering.

Served in Memphis

According to various sources, both mop-topped High School Musical alum Zac Efron and the Mid-South's own pop sensation Justin Timberlake have expressed an interest in starring in a movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Memphis. There's clearly only one way to determine who's best for the role of Memphis' Dewey Phillips-inspired DJ Huey Calhoun: Old school dance battle "straight hood."
