We hope readers will forgive this brief and not especially funny autobiographical pause. Fly on the Wall is growing, and we thought regular readers would appreciate the heads-up. After spending the past 17 years trapped inside this little strip of newsprint, your Pesky Fly is finally busting out and going digital. Although this column will continue to exist exactly as it is, the Fly on the Wall blog goes live at memphisflyer.com on Wednesday, June 19th.
Jim Hanas, a former Flyer staff writer who has since gone on to bigger and better things, created Fly on the Wall in 1996. To give readers some sense as to just how long ago that is in internet years, Google was just a startup, pornographic photographs took forever to load, and the internet basically looked like this:
Hanas' plan was to present bite-sized bits of Memphis-related news but with more personality and punch lines than you find in typical news briefs. It was, essentially, a blog before anybody had ever heard the word. The difference is that even when it went online, the column's content was created with a little gray strip of newsprint in mind.
The new blog will continue its mission to seek out the creme de la weird of local news, and we hope readers will continue to send us links to Memphis stories, videos, and photographs that are screaming for a punch line.
And now for the exciting news: Historically, Fly on the Wall has been a one-man show, but, after all these years of writing about a fictional Fly-Team, an actual Fly-Team has been assembled. Your Pesky Fly is being joined online by members of the Wiseguys improv comedy troupe, who will provide hard-hitting news stories and thoughtful opinion pieces. Or maybe just some jokes.
