Flip Your Wig
Frayser, TN — As a public service announcement, Fly on the Wall would like to remind readers not to buy wigs on the street. Chances are that bargain street hair is also hot hair. According to police reports, a crack team of organized weave-burglars is operating in the North Memphis area and has already stolen an estimated $18,000 worth of human hair from the Beauty & Beyond store on Frayser Boulevard. Store owner Mehdi Shoman told WREG-TV that there's a market for stolen scalps. "You can't track it, of course," he explained. "Because it's just hair."
Speaking of crime in Memphis, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office reports that 51-year-old Felix Hall, a "longtime criminal" has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after being caught driving a maroon 2005 Freightliner truck that had been reported stolen from a Memphis-area semi dealer a week earlier "with a box of stolen chicken inside." Contents of the cab included "a large pair of bolt cutters, a cut lock, and a cardboard box partially filled with frozen chicken breasts from Wendy's."
Maybe our city's reputation precedes? Four food writers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette came to town for a conference and were freaked out by scenic South Front: "Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken in downtown Memphis isn't much to look at ... on a street flush with boarded-up windows, it's the kind of place 'fraidy-cat tourists would steer clear of for fear of getting mugged. I'll admit my first thought was, 'This is it? The place so many people are talking about?'" They liked the chicken, at least.
This week's best Memphis-related headline comes from buzz-culture website uproxx.com: "Jerry The King Lawler Owns A Batmobile And Drives It Around Because It's Good To Be The King."
