Get Out This Weekend in Memphis

Don't stay home moping from the heat this weekend. Get out and do something! Here are few recommendations to get you started on the path to a fuller social life:

See Joey Lauren Adams from Mallrats and Chasing Amy at the Mississippi Lay-By Music and Literature Festival on Friday night. The Arkansas native will moderate a panel of writers featuring Andre Dubus III (House of Sand and Fog) and David Wroblewski (The Story of Edgar Sawtelle) at 6 p.m. at the Turnrow Book Company in Greenville, Mississippi.

Still dreaming of catching Rod Stewart in concert? Um, don't know if that'll ever happen. But you can catch a Rod Stewart impersonator, as well as Prince and Tina Turner tribute artists, at the Thrillusions Magical Rock Concert at Harrah's Casino from Friday through Sunday night. The show also includes a performance by magician James Brandon (hence the name, Magical Rock Concert).

If air-conditioning, Julie Andrews, and plush seating are a few of your favorite things, don't miss the Orpheum Theatre's screening of The Sound of Music on Friday night at 7:15 p.m.

Pack your cooler and prepare your picnic spread for Earth, Wind, and Fire's "Live at the Garden" performance at the Memphis Botanic Garden. The gates open at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

Or if blues is more your bag, cross the bridge into Arkansas for The Daddy Mack Blues Band's outdoor show at West Memphis' Worthington Park. The show begins at 6 p.m night.
