True story: The first time I interviewed the late, great Jim Dickinson it was in regard to the historic Sex Pistols Memphis concert in 1978. Putting that experience into perspective, Dickinson said it was one of the two most exciting concerts he'd ever seen. The other? Guns N' Roses at the Pyramid, where, according to Dickinson, "the only thing you could hear was the bass and an occasional 'fuck.'" When the "band" — really just Axl Rose (above); they should probably call themselves Hired Guns N' Roses — plays the DeSoto Civic Center this week, will it be that kind of thrilling mess? Or will it be a maddening, soul-sucking mess? Or just a normal concert? Any of those is possible, but I wouldn't bet on the latter. In any event, the band ("the band") that gave us one classic album (Appetite for Destruction) led by an even more classic single ("Sweet Child O' Mine") is a reminder of a better arena-rock time, when it wasn't so unusual for classic guitar-bass-drum units to be really big and really good at the same time. Here's hoping they can take paying customers back to "Paradise City" for one night at least. The Axl Rose-led current incarnation of Guns N' Roses plays the DeSoto Civic Center on Monday, December 5th. Showtime is 8 p.m.
