At Agricenter International on Saturday, it's the inaugural CupcakeCamp Memphis.
Interestingly enough, no cupcakes will be bought or sold during the event. But cupcake-eating? There will be plenty of that at this fund-raiser based on the BarCamp idea of crowd-sourcing. Participants — professional and amateur bakers, cupcake enthusiasts, etc. — are asked to bring a minimum of 24 cupcakes or 48 mini-cupcakes (and those cupcakes can be store-bought). Or, you can come empty-handed. The $3 entry fee gets you all the cupcakes you can eat.
Sherronda Johnson, CupcakeCamp Memphis organizer, first heard about the concept during a cake-decorating class. Johnson is affiliated with the nonprofit Women of Style, Spirit, and Success, and she decided that the event and the organization would make a good fit. Proceeds also will go to the Seeds 2 Life organization.
Competitive types can enter one of these contests: Healthiest Cupcake, Most Unique, or Best Memphis-themed Design. Among the bakers participating are Bumblebee Bakery, Twiniques Cakes, Sugaree's, and Ella's Basic Baking.
Johnson says that besides the cupcakes, there will be other refreshments available, including ice cream.
"You can't have cake without ice cream," she says.
