If you want to have your pizza and eat healthy too, pay a visit to Fire-n-Stone, a brick-oven gourmet pizzeria. Corey Dunavant started Fire-n-Stone in Southaven a little more than two years ago and added a second location in Germantown earlier this year.
"I've worked in restaurants since high school. After my son was born in 1998, I felt that I needed to take this restaurant work to the next level," Dunavant says. And so Fire-n-Stone was born.
Dunavant believes that "not all pizzas are created equal" and thus offers 15 specialty pizzas -- Veggieholic, Ooohhh Piggie, Caribbean spicy jerk chicken Philly Steak, among them -- plus an endless number of build-your-own pies, if you can't settle on any of the restaurant's creations.
The restaurant also offers salads, healthy wraps, and toasted specialty sandwiches, such as the portobella, smoked-turkey melt, veggie, muffuletta, and the "Godfather Italian" with thick slices of Genoa salami, hot capicolla, and pepperoni, all covered with mozzarella.
Some may equate a big, triple-cheese pizza with coronary disease, but Fire-n-Stone takes a healthy approach.
"People are more conscious of what they eat," Dunavant says. "But, at the same time, they'd like to have a pizza every now and then. We're trying to provide a healthier option."
Dunavant's number-one choice for the health-conscious is the "Healthy Man's Pizza" with virgin olive oil, roasted garlic, light mozzarella, spinach, red onions, Roma tomatoes, jerk chicken, pineapples, and jalapenos. Dunavant entered it in the international healthy pizza competition at Montreal's Moovjam Festival, an event designed to help fight childhood obesity and make youngsters aware of the importance of healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle.
"There were 20 competitors total -- 10 from Canada and 10 from the United States," Dunavant says. "Our Healthy Man's Pizza placed second overall."
Both locations of Fire-n-Stone are open Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Grisanti's Bol A Pasta celebrates its 10th anniversary this month with a special three-course dinner available throughout September. The menu will change weekly and features such favorite dishes as Miss Mary's salad, filet of sole with lemon caper butter sauce and angel hair pasta, sweet sausage ragu pasta, and cannoli with chocolate chips and toasted nuts.
The price for the three-course menu ranges from $10.95 to $14.95. Frank Grisanti, who manages the two Bol A Pasta locations, sees this anniversary special as an opportunity to have a great meal that "will fit nicely into a family's budget for a night out."
