North Alabama native and University of Memphis graduate Jason Isbell got his break as a third guitarist and songwriter with the Drive-By Truckers, with whom he penned the band favorite "Outfit," among other terrific songs. But as of this year's Here We Rest, Isbell has now recorded as many albums (three) as a solo artist as he did with the Truckers. In that band, Isbell came across as the folkie, but as a solo artist, the folk- and bar-band rock template has made room for country, blues, swamp rock, and soul. All these elements co-exist nicely on Here We Rest, a literate, heartfelt portrait of downbeat small-town lives. Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit, play the Hi-Tone Café on Friday, June 24th, with Kentucky Knife Fight and Heavy Eyes. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10.
