Lamar! Lamar!? You Lost? And to Trent Lott??

Yep, guess who’s baaaack! Tennessee’s senior U.S. senator, Lamar Alexander, the odds-on favorite to win election as Republican Minority Whip, has been upset (via a single vote of the Republican caucus) by -- Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott. Yes, that Trent Lott, the former GOP majority leader who got keystered and replaced by another Tennessee senator, Bill Frist, at the end of 2002.

Lott’s mistake? Having said the following about a well-known erstwhile segregationist and 1948 Dixiecrat presidential nominee: “When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either.”

Well, we have had all these problems. Hope you saved your Confederate money, boys; now we’ve got just the man to ride herd on those cats.
