Bush for President?
Shelby County public defender Steven Bush ("Just Busted," February 23rd issue) should be president.
Romney = Obama
I ask Tennessee voters, does this country want to elect a GOP nominee who is another form of Obama? If we choose to support Romney, that is exactly what will happen. There is not much difference between Romney and Obama, especially with Romney endorsing Romneycare in his own state. Romney is not the true conservative he claims to be; he only talks about how much money he's made. Watching him in debates, he smooth talks around the issues and has a hard time relating to the average person. Romney has no national or foreign policy experience as our other GOP candidates do. Why would this country elect a nominee without national or international political experience as Romney? That's exactly what we did when the country elected Obama, and look what happened to us! Why would we do that again? And I don't think the Olympic experience that Romney boasts about qualifies.
A GOP victory in the general election will require a candidate to have the strongest contrast between himself and Obama; Romney cannot draw that contrast. I urge Tennessee voters to look at Speaker Gingrich, his vast experience and knowledge; his simple, straightforward plans to solve major issues and his "can do" attitude that will get things done to bring back the traditions and freedoms this country was founded on.

Some misinformed Americans (probably Fox News junkies) seem to think we can drill our way out of high gas prices. They write letters that the government must lease more public land to the oil companies. What they do not know and will never hear on Fox is the fact that they already lease about 90 million acres off-shore and 38 million more acres onshore. That doesn't include the one million acres that the Obama administration just agreed to open with Mexico.
And they complain about the president killing the Keystone pipeline. They fail to realize that a final route for the pipeline was not in place. They also apparently do not know that the tar sands oil would go to Port Arthur, Texas, an international tax-free zone. Guess where the refined oil would go — to the highest bidders, like China and India.
Unlike oil from Alaska that must be refined and sold in the U.S., the tar sands oil will not reduce the cost of gas. It will increase oil refiners' profits. The president has encouraged the building of an American pipeline from Oklahoma to Texas. That pipeline will transport oil produced and refined here.
So, Fox News junkies, do some fact-checking before you help Rupert Murdoch spread his lies.
Last Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period preceding Easter when Christians would abstain from meat and dairy products in remembrance of Jesus' 40 days of reflection.
Devout Christians who still observe meatless Lent help reduce chronic diseases, environmental degradation, and animal abuse. In the past four decades, dozens of medical reports have linked consumption of animal products with elevated risk of heart failure, stroke, cancer, and other killer diseases. A 2007 U.N. report named meat production as the world's largest source of greenhouse gases and water pollution. Undercover investigations have documented animals being raised for food under abject conditions of caging, crowding, deprivation, drugging, mutilation, and manhandling.
Lent offers a superb opportunity to honor Jesus' powerful message of compassion and love for all living beings, to stop subsidizing disease, devastation, and cruelty, and to choose a wholesome nonviolent diet of vegetables, fruits, and grains and a vast array of meat and dairy alternatives. It's a diet mandated in Genesis 1:29 and observed in the Garden of Eden.
Diversity in Media
I'd like to offer my own suggestion for how we address the obsession with race in our city and county: cultural and political diversification of media. It's easy to issue a casual remark about race when you dominate the media and most of your staff looks and thinks like you.
